A court in Kazakhstan sentences its own citizen who took part in the war against Ukraine as part of the Russian PMC Wagner to more than 6 years in prison

A citizen of Kazakhstan was sentenced to six years and eight months in prison for participating in the war against Ukraine.

This was reported by the Kazakh service of Radio Free Europe/ Radio Liberty, citing the court's verdict.

34-year-old Alexei Shompolov was sentenced. During the trial, he pleaded guilty and stated that he had done so out of financial need. The man got a job at Wagner following an advert on a social network. He was promised a monthly payment of 240,000 rubles.

Shompolov said that when signing the contract, he was allegedly misled into believing that he would not break the law, as "there is not a war in Ukraine, but a special operation to liberate civilians".

Although Kazakhstan has not condemned Russia's war against Ukraine, the country's legislation prohibits the participation of citizens in foreign wars.

It will be recalled that a court in Uzbekistan sentenced a man accused of serving in the army of the illegal armed group DPR.
