Firefighters recover bodies of 18 people who may be migrants in northern Greece

Rescuers have found the bodies of 18 people near the city of Alexandroupolis, where a major wildfire was burning for a fourth day. Authorities suggest that they could have been migrants.

The New York Times reports.

"There have been no reports of missing people in the area, so the authorities said they were examining the possibility that the dead had entered the country illegally," said Greek fire service spokesman Yannis Artopios.

Alexandroupolis is located in the Evros region, which borders Turkey and is a crossing point for thousands of migrants seeking to enter Europe.

In addition, forest fires also broke out on the islands of Kythnos and Evia, in the northern region of Rodopi and in Aspropyrgos and Fyli, west of Athens.

It will be recalled that forest fires have broken out on the Spanish island of Tenerife.
