In Ontario, Canada, grade 10 students will be required to study the Holodomor in Ukraine as part of the Canadian history course.
CBC reports.
The study of the Holodomor will become mandatory in autumn 2025. During the course, students will be taught that the Holodomor was a result of the totalitarian policies of the communist Soviet Union, leading to a man-made famine in Ukraine that killed millions of Ukrainians between 1932 and 1933.
Minister of Education Stephen Lecce believes that expanding the history course will help children understand the impact of the Holodomor on the Ukrainian community in Canada.
"This famine against the Ukrainian people was an act of genocide, and it is our duty as Canadians to ensure we remember it," Lecce said.
Ontario is also providing $400,000 to the Canada-Ukraine Foundation to support a Holodomor national awareness tour.
