Russian POWs satisfied with treatment in Ukrainian detention centres — UN

UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, Alice Jill, said that Russian prisoners of war are satisfied with the treatment they receive in detention centres in Ukraine, and some are surprised.

Alice Jill said this at a press conference, Ukrinform reports.

"The Ukrainian authorities have made efforts to treat Russian POWs with respect. Prisoners of war are housed in barracks-type buildings, provided with bed linen, clothing, hygiene products, and food," Alice Jill said.

The facility where the prisoners are held is tidy, they have good food, and those who need it are provided with medical care. The prisoners did paid work and had the opportunity to visit the library and stay in the open air. In addition, they were given the opportunity to keep in touch with their families by phone, she says.

In another facility where POWs are held, there are infrastructure problems, and the penitentiary does not fully meet international standards despite attempts to repair some parts.

Alice Jill noted that she had a full and unimpeded access to all facilities and could conduct confidential interviews with anyone who wanted to talk to her.

At the same time, the UN Special Rapporteur stated that she had information about cases of alleged ill-treatment of Russian prisoners by the Ukrainian military during their capture and transfer to the facilities where they were held.

It will be recalled that the UN mission to investigate the Russian terrorist attack in the colony in Olenivka was suspended due to lack of access to the crime scene.
