Portugal becomes 23rd country to endorse declaration of support for Ukraine's NATO membership
Ukraine and Portugal have approved a joint declaration in which, among other things, Portugal supports Ukraine's membership in NATO. In total, Portugal became the 23rd country to approve such a declaration.
This is stated on the website of the Office of the President.
"In coordination with Allies and partners, the Republic of Portugal continues to support the strengthening of Ukraine's defence capabilities and recalls that Ukraine has the right to choose its own security measures [...] Ukraine has officially applied for accelerated NATO membership in September 2022. The Republic of Portugal will continue to support Ukraine on its path to future membership and supports Ukraine's membership in NATO as soon as conditions allow," the statement reads.
Earlier, Bulgaria became the 22nd country to formally support Ukraine's accession to NATO.
The day before, Turkish President Erdoğan said that Ukraine should join NATO. At the same time, Joe Biden believes that there is currently no unanimity in the Alliance on whether to bring Ukraine into NATO during the war.
